　　北宋中叶，外患日亟，辽国欲吞并中原，辽国王爷耶律连（王龙威饰）屡次率兵入关，宋朝君臣昏庸，无力御侮 ，全赖大将军杨继业率部迎击辽兵，才可粗安。潘仁美与管规既嫉妒杨家将功业，竟通番卖国，勾结辽人，加害杨家将，金沙滩一战，杨家几乎全军覆灭，只得五郎(刘家辉饰)及六郎(傅声饰)自乱军中突围。五郎负伤逃至荒野，转至清凉寺出家为僧，苦练成“八卦棍法”。潘仁美勾结辽将围困五台山，国恨家仇在胸，五郎单枪匹马下山，以八卦棍击毙辽将及奸臣后，远赴天涯，宏扬武学佛法。
